Fellow Maria Lumbierres gave a talk entitled Global patterns of mammals’ distribution based on a new set of Area of Habitat maps on 17 June 2021 during a symposium of the online 100th Annual Meeting of the American Society of Mammalogists. She was also the Moderator of the Symposium III called Global Trends in Mammals.

Four Inspire4Nature fellows and several supervisors presented a symposium entitled Global trends in mammal distribution and threats on 17 June 2021 during the 100th Annual Meeting of the American Society of Mammalogists . Carmen Soria, Maria Lumbierres, Prabhat Raj Dahal and Gonzalo Albaladejo gave several talks. Supervisors Carlo Rondinini and Michela Pacifici also organised and attended the session.

Fellow Ivon Cuadros Casanova led a book chapter on Conserving mammals, as part of the new Island Press book on The Economics of Sustainable Food. It reviews the main threats faced by mammals species worldwide, particularly as they relate to food production, and the economic and environmental benefits of conserving mammals. The 5th and last training session of Inspire4Nature has now started, with the aim of improving the fellows’ job-hunting skills as they continue their career path in either academic or non-academic environments. We began with a course on the 1st June 2021, by Ana Rodrigues (senior researcher at the CNRS), Matt Jones (Head of Programme Business & Biodiversity at UNEP-WCMC) and Elise Belle (Senior Project Portfolio Officer at WCMC-Europe).
The course focused on how to read a job offer (academic and non-academic) and how candidates can tailor their CV and cover letter to best demonstrate their fit to the position. Next: fellows will be practising on real job offers and get personalised feedback on their CVs and cover letters.
An extraordinary year demands extraordinary measures: the Supervisory Board of Inspire4Nature reconvened for a fourth extraordinary meeting on the 25th May 2021.

Inspire4Nature fellow Marie Morgane Rouyer was interviewed live on the United Nation’s Biodiversity Instagram account, as part of its takeover by the Global Youth Biodiversity Network. The takeover started on the 17th of May as part of the celebrations around the International Day for Biological Diversity (22 May), and included sharing of youth-led actions, activities, events, and live interviews. Final course on communicating at the science-policy interface: communicating with policy makers, by Jerry Harrison, Specialist of Ecosystem Assessment and Policy Support at UNEP-WCMC.
Fellow Martin Beal did an online presentation entitled Albatrosses & large petrels on 5th May 2021 during the World Seabird Twitter Conference. He presented the results of his first thesis chapter. His work provides evidence base for countries to pursue effective international collaborations safeguard the ocean.
