I4N fellows at the Student Conference on Conservation Science

Three Inspire4Nature fellows – Shawn Dove, Gonzalo Albaladejo, Joe Kelly – attended the 20th Student Conference on Conservation Science, in Cambridge, and met a very special guest: Sir David Attenborough!

The David Attenborough Building (DAB), at the Department of Zoology of the University of Cambridge, is home to the Cambridge Conservation Initiative, the hub of the largest cluster of conservation organisations in the world. Most of the Inspire4Nature fellows will spend a few months at the DAB, in secondments to BirdLife International, UN Environment WCMC and IUCN.

Inspire4Nature Scientific Coordinator, Ana Rodrigues, chaired the Questions & Answers session in which conference delegated put their questions directly to Sir David.

Presentation: Maximizing the conservation value of existing tracking data

Inspire4Nature fellow João Guilherme gave a presentation on the objectives of his PhD project on Afro-Paleactic migratory birds to an audience of experts in the field, including migration scientists, conservationists and professionals involved in linking science and policy. This was at a workshop organised by the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds dedicated to discussing how science and policy can address threats to Afro-Palearctic migratory birds, which took place on the 12-13 March 2019 in Cambridge. 1st Inspire4Nature Training Session

The Inspire4Nature training sessions are cross-project opportunities to learn about key concepts related to the science-policy interface in biodiversity conservation, to develop new skills and for establishing collaborations between the fellows. The First Inspire4Nature Training Session took place from the 31st October to the 7th November 2018. The agenda covered:

  • The international biodiversity conservation organisations of Inspire4Nature
  • International biodiversity conservation: global and local perspectives
  • Two global conservation standards: Red List of Threatened Species and Key Biodiversity Areas
  • What does it actually mean to be an Inspire4Nature Fellow?
  • Webdesign in WordPress
  • Gender issues in research and in Inspire4Nature
  • Fellows’ project work

The meeting took place in Montpellier, France, hosted by the Centre d’Ecologie Fonctionnelle et Evolutive, a research unit of the CNRS and the University of Montpellier.

Inspire4Nature First General Assembly

The Inspire4Nature General Assembly brings together all the fellows and senior researchers. The first General Assembly took place on the 30th October 2018, with each fellow presenting him/herself and their individual PhD project.

The meeting took place in Montpellier, France, hosted by the Centre d’Ecologie Fonctionnelle et Evolutive, a research unit of the CNRS and the University of Montpellier.

1st Inspire4Nature Supervisory Board Meeting

The Supervisory Board is the decision-making body governing the Inspire4Nature Consortium, responsible for the overall management and monitoring of the project. Its first meeting took place on the 29 October 2018 in Montpellier.

The Supervisory Board is composed of one member of each participant organisation, as well as two representatives of the fellows as observers. The agenda of the first meeting covered: progress on recruitment, data management plan, financial management, discussion of the future training sessions and future management meetings, upcoming project deliverables.

The meeting took place in Montpellier, France, hosted by the Centre d’Ecologie Fonctionnelle et Evolutive, a research unit of the CNRS and the University of Montpellier.

Ana Rodrigues (scientific coordinator) and Pauline Roger (project manager) presented the Inspire4Nature at an information session on European funding sources, for researchers of the Faculty of Economics of the University of Montpellier, organised by the Doctoral School on Economics and Management. During this session, which took place in Montpellier on the 21 June 2018, Inspire4Nature was presented as an example of a successful ITN application, illustrating the process underpinning the consortium creation and project construction.
