Inspire4Nature fellow Carmen Soria presented a poster entitled Trait data quality and availability: a review of mammal trait databases in July 2019 at the International Conference on Conservation Biology, at Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. She analysed some of the most popular publicly available mammal trait databases following a hierarchical methodology to produce a combined database obtained. This allowed her to identify which mammal orders, trait types and parts of the world are data deficient.

Inspire4Nature fellow Shawn Dove presented the topic and focus of his PhD research as part of the Graduate Research Symposium of UCL’s Department of Genetics, Evolution and Environment. He spoke about why we need to measure changes in the state of global biodiversity, the weaknesses in current methods, and how his research will improve global and national biodiversity indices. He won a prize for best 1st year presentation.

Inspire4Nature fellow Scott Ford presented on 24 April 2019 a poster entitled Prevalence of Deforestation Leakage Surrounding Tropical Forest Protected Areas at the Global Land Programme Open Science Meeting 2019. University of Bern, Switzerland. An integral part of his PhD research on Protected Areas dynamics, the poster is co-authored by Scott’s supervisors Martin Rudbeck Jepsen and Ole Mertz.

The 2nd Training Session – “Theory and practice of identifying globally important sites for biodiversity conservation” – was dedicated to training fellows on the process of identifying Key Biodiversity Areas (KBAs), using the Global Standard for the identification of KBAs.
Besides the 15 fellows, the session brought together external scientists specialised in different taxonomic groups of the Greek biota as well as KBA experts. The programme included:
The training session took place from the 3-12 April 2019, at the beautiful Hydrobiological station of Rhodes (Greece), a historic landmark and a research unit of our host organisation, the Hellenic Centre for Marine Research (HCMR).
