Inspire4Nature fellow Sean Jellesmark led a new article entitled A counterfactual approach to measure the impact of wet grassland conservation on UK breeding bird populations, co-authored by Malcolm Ausden, Tim M. Blackburn, Richard D. Gregory, Mike Hoffmann, Dario Massimino, Louise McRae and Piero Visconti.
Measuring how conservation actions impact target populations is impeded by a lack of appropriate control groups. In this study, the authors demonstrate how counterfactual control groups can be created from monitoring data and apply this approach to evaluate the impact of wetland reserves on breeding trends for five wetland bird species.

Fellow Scott Ford presented a talk entitled Measuring change in protected-area coverage over time: a methodological comparison and implications for South America at the Society for Conservation Biology Latin America and Carribean group meeting held virtually on 12 November 2020. The talk highlighted a novel methodology for assessing changes in protected-area coverage and discussed the policy implications of the new findings.

Fellow Kathrin Holenstein presented a poster entitled Permeability of Protected Areas to Non-Native Species in September 2020 at Neobiota, the 11th International Conference on Biological Invasions, in Vodice, Croatia.
She analyzed non-native animal and plant data from a Norwegian biodiversity data base and showed that non-native species present surrounding protected areas influence the community of non-native species within them.
