Inspire4Nature fellow Matt Ford took part in a panel discussion at the official Meeting of the EU Climate and Environment Ministers with the Green 10 Organizations, where he gave an official intervention on conservation of freshwater biodiversity within the context of the Water Framework Directive, the bloc’s flagship freshwater legislation.
The event was organised by the current Croatian Presidency of the Council of the European Union and took place the evening before the latest gathering of the Committee on Environment, Public Health and Food Safety (ENVI).
ENVI is reponsible for EU environmental policy and protection measures, while The Green 10 is a coalition of ten of the largest environmental organisations and networks, including the World Wide Fund for Nature, Birdlife International and Greenpeace.
The event also featured panel discussions on climate change and air quality, and featured introductory words from Executive Vice President of the European Union and commissioner for the Green Deal, Frans Timmermans.
Other speakers on the panel with Matt included Tomislav Ćorić (Croatian Minister for Environment and Energy), Aravossis Konstantinos (Greek Secretary General for Natural Environment and Waters), Bettina Doeser (Head of the European Commission Clean Water Unit), Michael Sponar (Acting Head of the European Commission Marine Environment and Water Industry Unit) and Sergiy Moroz (European Environmental Bureau Senior Policy Officer on Water and Biodiversity).
