Fourth Training Session: Theory and Practice of Communicating at the Science-Policy Interface

The Inspire4Nature training sessions are cross-project opportunities to learn about key concepts related to the science-policy interface in biodiversity conservation, to develop new skills and for establishing collaborations between the fellows. The fourth training session takes place remotely and is structured into four modules, as detailed below.

  • Understand the pathway for communicating about scientific research via a press release, with the final aim of reaching the mainstream media
  • Learn how to write an effective press release
Module structure and timeline
  1. Course [3 hours, zoom] – 23 September 2020 – available HERE
  2. Fellows’ independent work – from 23 September to 15 December. Steps:
    • Draft a press release , either based on a paper you are working on or a published paper of your interest.
    • Ask another fellow to review your first draft.
    • Send second draft + paper on which it is based to your tutor: by 13 November (Tutor sends back comments within a week).
    • Send third draft to your tutor: by 27 November (Tutor sends back comments within a week).
    • Send final piece to Pauline: by 11 December (Pauline will upload to the intranet).
    • Read other fellows’ press releases: by 15 December
  3. Final discussion meeting [2 hours, zoom] – 16 Dec – 11h-13h French Time
    Meeting with fellows & teachers to exchange about results, difficulties, lessons learnt…

  2. Fellows’ independent work – from 8-20 January
    Each fellow prepares a 15 mins presentation for the General Assembly
  3. General Assembly [2 days, zoom] – 21-22 Jan
  4. Feedback to fellows regarding their presentation
    By the tutors, and by the other fellows.
  5. Final discussion [2 hours, zoom] – 25January 14h-16h (Paris time)

  • Understand both perspectives in an interview: what the interviewer wants to obtain in the interview, and what the interviewee wants to transmit.
  • Practice preparing for an interview as interviewee and then being interviewed
  • Practice preparing for an interview as interviewer and then interview someone

  1. Theory: Course Facilitation and interview skills – By Charlotte Coales – Monday 15 March

  • This training is aimed at anyone who is interested in facilitating discussion events and interviewing speakers.  It is also useful training on how to be interviewed (and give a good interview) yourself!  We will explore best practice, the relationship between an audience and the experts speaking, and reflect on what makes a good facilitated event and a good interview.  We will cover:
    The role of the facilitator/interviewer/interviewee

    • First impressions and body language
    • Key skills involved in effective facilitation (between an audience and a speaker)
    • Interview techniques
    • Dealing with tricky situations
    • Reflection and best practice
  1. Practice: Being interviewed – Interviews of fellows done by Charlotte Coales – Monday 22 March (15 mins interview; 15 mins feedback and discussion).
  1. Practice: Interviewing – Fellows to organise an interview with someone of their choice. Interviews up to 15 minutes. Fellows ensure interview is filmed and then send it to Pauline to upload to the intranet.
  1. Fellows feedback on the interviews – By Thursday 26 March. Optional: Fellows watch each other’s interviews and give feedback using a google form (see links above). Feedback sent to fellows by Friday 27 March.
  1. Final discussion meeting Monday 29 March. Meeting with fellows & teachers to exchange about results, difficulties, lessons learnt.
